Liner Notes

As Terry Carolan and I mastered the tracks for this album, I was overwhelmed by many of the great memories that stirred inside of me while listening to these songs again; many after more than three decades.  With some of the songs, I can still clearly remember those wonderful performance moments that were magically captured while the red light was on and the tape was rolling.  Those memories are forever fresh in my mind!   I was also reminded of some very unique and funny things that occurred during some of those sessions that I probably shouldn’t put in writing here (but if you ever ask me about them, I’ll tell you!).

A handful of these songs were very challenging to get recorded at all back then; sometimes due to tired voices that just couldn’t capture a great take or in trying to beat the clock before our session ended and someone else’s session was scheduled to start.  On more than one of these sessions, we had to haul ass out of there to get to a show!  Terry and I also faced a few technical challenges with some of the session tapes that had suffered from deterioration brought on by decades of storage, even in the best environmental conditions.  But as Norman Petty, Buddy Holly’s manager/producer, said to me many years ago when we were recording with him:  “An artist creates his art with the tools he has available to him at the time.”  That’s certainly true with every single song on this album!  In order to try to get a cohesive, overall album sound, we used the legendary Abbey Road mixing desk via digital plugin to re-master every song on the album.  I love the extra punch and the  warmth the Abbey Road mixing desk adds to all of the tracks!

Some of you may know that my personal mantra has always been “Keep Showing Up!”.  As a lot of musicians can testify to, it can sometimes be very difficult for an artist to maintain the necessary passion and conviction to go out there every night, gig after gig, year after year, and openly share their music with an audience.  But if you approach it with love in your heart and you keep showing up, you just might get the validation that proves your efforts have been worthwhile and have really meant something to others besides yourself.  I am most grateful to have experienced this in my musical journey.  The fact that my songs are still enjoyed by people all over the world today is both humbling and magical!

I’m very happy that all of these songs can now be presented here in this one collection!  If you’ve got a pair of headphones, I highly recommend you listen to these tracks with them on to really enjoy all of the little moving parts and ear candy in each song.  By the way, this album was mixed and mastered to be listened to LOUD – so turn it UP!

Special Thanks To:  Pop N Atsushi, Rick Blackwell, Andy Bradley, Gus Buzbee, Terry Carolan, Theresa Dimenno, Bobby Ginsburg, Ralph Gonzales, Doug Grube, Alice and Rudy Guerrero, Doug Hines, Toshio Iijima, Daisuke Kambe, Danny Kristensen, Brad LeGrone, Vernon Long, Richard Luckett, Duane Massey, Tommy McKenna, Huey Meaux, Randy Miller, Nelson Minnick, Richard Morant, Tom Nelis, George Palmer, Norman Petty, Ric Plunk, Rick Poss, Steve Poteet, Dave Rhan, Rick Richards, Charlie Ritchie, Lynn Samples, Rick Shepard, Jon Stone, Martin Tremblay, Dennis “Doc” Watson, Dave Williams.

I’d like to give big shout out to Terry Carolan, my dear friend and contemporary for many years for helping me digitally master these songs and for playing guitar and singing on some of these tracks.

And, as always, my love to PJ for always being there.   I could not have done any of this without you.

“Forever Fresh!” Songs, Lyrics & Players

At The Rock Club (2:56)

Kicking back the rain I go walking downtown

Looking through the papers just to see who’s in town.

There’s a bar on the corner as I go stumbling in

There’s a man on the stage and he looks like a friend.

At the Rock Club

Standing in the crowds as I’m singing out songs

Everything’s in motion, this is where I belong!

There’s a girl near my table but I don’t know her name

She says “that’s all right now, I’ll dance just the same! Dance! Dance!”

At the Rock Club

So many people watching the show

So glad I’m here now I know where to go

The place is jumping I don’t wanna go home!

Wherever you’re rockin’ all over this world

You’ll find a lot of places where the boys meet the girls

Put your mind to the music and let those feelings begin

You can come back tomorrow and do it again.

This Is It (2:56)

Baby this is it

I’ve got a feeling and I’m not gonna quit

Baby this is all there is.

I really wish that you could see

Of all the things that you mean to me

Baby this is all there is.

Always owing some other guy

Does he look in your eyes?

Does he see the same things that I do?  You!

Baby this is it

I’ve got a feeling and I’m not gonna quit

Baby this is all there is.

The seasons change and don’t come back

Pick up the pace and flow with that

Feelings when we’re near

I love the things that you whisper in my ear

Baby this is all there is.

Always owing some other guy

Does he look in your eyes?

Does he see the same things that I do?  You!

Baby this is it

I’ve got a feeling and I’m not gonna quit

Baby this is all there is.

This is all there is

I Feel Strange (3:02)

There’s nobody to hear if what you’re saying is clear.

‘Cause there is no one around who can echo the sound.

I feel strange, I feel strange, I feel strange …

We needn't travel so far to simple places where we are.

But isolation is pain. I’m hoping that it will change.

I feel strange, I feel strange, I feel strange …

Time tunnel stillness. Floating out of my room.

Giving way to the future. Like familiar cartoons.

Run away from the past. Nothing there ever lasts.

Look ahead to the new. Time is waiting for you.

I feel strange, I feel strange, I feel strange …

A.M. Romance (2:47)

She starts her day with A.M. Romance, God, it’s 5 o’clock!

She hears her lover say “Good morning!” from a tiny box.

He gives her love in the morning. But she wishes he’d wait till the evening time.

AM Romance - Something to pass the day.

She makes her way to work, by now it must be 9 o’clock.

She turns the knob to hear his voice, it puts her back on top.

She knows it’s only a fantasy but he runs away with her heart.

AM Romance - Love across the waves.

Though he may just be a make-believe affair, at least she knows he’ll always be there.

So now she’s home and making dinner wishing he were here.

She reaches for the dial that puts a new voice in her ear.

He’s not at all like the other one but she likes the sound that she’s hearing now.

AM Romance - Programming subject to change.

She listens as she’s getting ready for her thoughts to sleep.

For dreaming of the next day’s dawning gives her soul relief.

She can’t wait for the morning ‘cause her lover’s only a few hours away!

AM Romance - Love across the waves

Across the waves …

Above Suspicion (3:18)

She crosses the floor at right angles. Sizing him up with every smile.

He’s got his wits (She’s got those eyes). The only keys to their disguise.

Sometimes he wonders who she stays in shape for.

But when he asks, she turns him down.

Their lives are like a serial episode - Churning forward, spinning around.

‘Cos they’re above suspicion. They’re above suspicion.

They’re above suspicion, escaping their conviction.

They’re playing the game of a lifetime

But danger stands at every turn

He sees a chance (She takes his hand)

Identities must not be learned.

They watch the shadows move from side to side, as tension screams into the night.

The clock is counting out the seconds now, but they don’t feel they have to hide.

‘Cos they’re above suspicion. They’re above suspicion.

They’re above suspicion, escaping their conviction.

Well suddenly he looks over at her at thinks, “Gosh, how can I trust her?  We just met!”

And she’s looking at him and thinking the very same thing!

But they know one thing – (“What?”) - They like each other.

And as long as they play their cards right, no one will ever find out!

‘Cos they’re above suspicion. They’re above suspicion.

They’re above suspicion, escaping their conviction.

Find Ourselves (3:38)

You put your image up on the screen and you never take it down

We speak our words in indelible sentences sharply forming sounds.

We’re headed for some danger, we don’t know what the answer is

We don’t know what the questions are, we don’t know where to find ourselves

You can’t ignore the passion wave and you can’t neglect the crowd

We drift around the consequence but we never touch the ground.

We’re headed for some danger, we don’t know what the answer is

We don’t know what the questions are, we don’t know where to find ourselves

We’re finding no feelings (it’s not our concern)

There isn’t a meaning (there’s nothing to learn)

We find no reasons (we want to escape)

We take it for granted but is it too late?

We take it from your view (you see what we get)

We stare at the picture (and turn up the set)

We still find no meanings (we want to escape)

You take it for granted but is it too late?

You put your image up on the screen and you never take it down

We speak our words in indelible sentences sharply forming sounds.

We’re headed for some danger, we don’t know what the answer is

We don’t know what the questions are, we don’t know where to find ourselves

Simple Love (2:46)

Walking down the avenue with a special feeling that I get from you

It’s wonderful to be alive and feel so free.

Being with you through the best of times

I’m hoping that you’ll always be mine and sharing all the loving times that you do with me.

So now that we’re reaching and we’re touching the stars at night

Your reflection in my eyes makes me want to start setting my sights.

Now the birds are singing in the sky

They may not be perfect but still they fly

And as long as we’re together we can search for the best of things.

Making music with our hearts as one

I feel so happy when we’re having fun

I’m waiting for the simple pleasures that our love will bring.

So now that we’re reaching and we’re touching the stars at night

Your reflection in my eyes makes me want to start setting my sights.

Survival (3:13)

They put you through the ringer and you still come out alive

To keep running through this life it seems,

You’ve got to learn what it takes to survive

Oooh, what it takes to survive!

You gotta watch those politicians that try to tell you what to choose

When all they ever really do is flash a smile and turn the screw

Oooh, what it takes to survive!

We’re doing our best but we can’t get no rest

It’s in our belief.  We just want relief.

And - It’s playing their game that makes it seem so strange

They think it’s a lot, but you know it’s now.

Living with your city dream can make you surely lose your mind

But they tell me even a loser, baby, has got to win out some of the time

Oooh, what it takes to survive!

Damn you Ayatollah and all the fascist powers that be!

Well you can keep your country under thumb, but brother don’t you tread on me!

Oooh, what it takes to survive!

Rainy Day (4:17)

So what do I care if the sun don’t shine?

I’m just sitting here with time.

And as the clouds collect, I’ll draw my blinds

I’ll be OK, I’ll be just fine.

And it’s a rainy day, guess I’ll just dream away

Yes, it’s a rainy day without you

The winds blow the people on the streets below

As if they didn’t know where to go

The cars and the buses all move real slow

Seems like a film from long ago.

And it’s a rainy day, guess I’ll just dream away

Yes, it’s a rainy day without you

It’s funny how the rain puts things in black and white

Beleaguered by a rampage that goes on overnight

And when you rise tomorrow you find it’s there again

Sometimes my piano seems to be my only friend.

So, what do I care if the sun don’t shine?

I’m just sitting here with time.

And as the clouds collect, I’ll draw my blinds

I’ll be OK, I’ll be just fine

And it’s a rainy day, guess I’ll just dream away

Yes, it’s a rainy day without you.

And it’s a fading song, guess I’ll just fade along

Even if the words are wrong, so boo-boo.

Don’t Look Back For Me (3:19)

Friday night and the evening’s young, looking forward to see

Me and you on the dancin’ floor, summer’s hot as we breathe

Tender lines on your face tonight make me wonder

Later on when the lights go down and the sky shakes with thunder

Early morning I’ll rise to give you leave.

I always wanted you night and day, I thought of you in my sleep

But when you told me you needed room, my heart just couldn’t believe

Parallel we can’t seem to make it together

Between our lives always the pain and bad weather

Within your crowd you won’t see me – no no!

Don’t look back for me, don’t look back for me

Don’t look back for me, don’t look back for me

I couldn’t read your signals then ‘cause I was too close to your heart

What I took for love was really fear, but I couldn’t tell them apart.

Now I’m sitting here missing you, your smiling face I won’t see

And I won’t give you my heart again, this time it’s coming with me

Now and then as you search your mind think of me there.

And I’ll remember those nights gone by when our love was in the air

Now it’s late and I must be on my way.

Don’t look back for me, don’t look back for me

Don’t look back for me, don’t look back for me

I Can Make You Happy (2:00)

I can make you happy before the show is over

If you will understand me girl.

Do you know what it means to feel helpless in your eyes?

The way I look into them tonight.

I’d like to know you better then we could talk together

Go hand in hand forever.

Why can’t you understand me girl?

You’ve got to feel the music

It’s got to take you there.

If you don’t want to know me, why do you stare?

These shining lights can blind you, but I know that you can see

If only you would talk to me.

I can make you happy …

[Mademoiselle]:

What is he saying? I don't understand a word!

I like the way he plays the guitar!

I hope he loves me!

What is he saying?  What is he saying?  I don't understand!

What is he saying?

I can make you happy before the show is over

If you will understand me girl.

Do you know what it means to feel helpless in your eyes?

The way I look into them tonight.

Us (3:21)

Are you really happy now?  You’re free that’s all you wanted.

Does it really matter that your soul is always haunted?

Remember how things used to be when you were mine?

Remember me and you, us.

Me and you, us.

You made your decision, there was nothing left to say

I just hope you’re happy now with no more games to play

Remember days of fun, the sun would always shine.

Remember me and you, us.

Me and you, us.

The times may change and you will open up your eyes

When you discover that there’s no use for you to hide.

Now you’re going back in time, you’re reeling through the years

But you won’t see me waiting there, you’d better dry your tears

Remember we were special people sharing love.

Remember me and you, us.

Me and you, us.  Me and you, us.  Me and you, us.

Gotta Move Away (3:05)

I woke up this morning my hair in my face

I played back my memory but it was erased

It seems I do nothing right

I wanna stay home tonight

But my landlady told me I gotta move away!

Gotta move away – yeah, yeah

Gotta move away – yeah, yeah

Gotta move away – yeah, yeah

I pulled on my trousers and crawled to the phone

I rang up my girlfriend but she wasn’t home

I don’t know just where I’ll go

I can’t think of anyone I know

I just can’t believe it, I gotta move away!

Gotta move away – yeah, yeah

Gotta move away – yeah, yeah

Gotta move away – yeah, yeah

I wish the landlady wouldn’t be so uptight

When after all, I’ve always treated her right

If she lets me stay, I promise, I’ll be real good

Or move into her place next week, if only I could

If only I could …

I moved in that weekend, she baked me a cake

She said don’t you worry now there’s no rent to pay

She said “We’ll get married real soon and we’ll start our own Baby Boom!”

I can’t wait to leave here, I gotta move away!

Gotta move away – yeah, yeah

Gotta move away – yeah, yeah

Gotta move away – yeah, yeah

One Desire (2:55)

The music’s pumping and the lights are wild

You make me move when I’m standing still

You’ve got the spirit of a newborn child

It’s in your magic, it’s in your feel.

One desire.  One desire.

May sound crazy but it’s true

One desire is to dance with you.

My one desire.
My one desire.

Please understand me girl, you look so fine

I can’t believe I’m alone with you

Can’t take your image away from my mind

I think you know what I’m going through.

One desire.  One desire.

May sound crazy but it’s true

One desire is to dance with you.

My one desire.
My one desire.

I’ve never held a girl so close before

You know how good it can be

With you I’m not quite so alone anymore

Stay with me.  Dance with me.

My one desire.
My one desire.

One desire.  One desire.

May sound crazy but it’s true

One desire is to dance with you.

My one desire.

Right To Know (4:09)

Caught up in your dreams of the day

Wheeling and dealing time will slip away

Reeling off your words in style

Living behind your frozen smile.

Now it’s our right to know

I don’t know why you can’t see

That it’s our right to know

I try so hard to believe you.

Riding on the coat tails of the days gone by

The stirring of the ashes settles in my eyes

It must be a sign of the times

Taking our cues from blind.

Now it’s our right to know

I don’t know why you can’t see

That it’s our right to know

I try so hard to believe you

Swimming in a bitter sea

It’s not where I’d prefer to be

I have to trust someone to tell me why

Telling me that it’s OK

That’s all I ever hear you say

You sing away the truth with lullabies

Standing on the edge of persistence

Calculating who will go the distance

But then it comes down to me and you

Knowing that what is ours we choose.

Now it’s our right to know

I don’t know why you can’t see

That it’s our right to know

I try so hard to believe you

Someone/Somebody (2:09)

Won’t you give it just one more chance?

Love can really help an old romance

Can’t you see your feelings are out of balance?

Someone can help you, Somebody wants you

Somebody needs you, Someone can help you

Tell me girl now what you say?

Don’t you throw all my dreams away!

Everyday I’m trying hard to make you stay.

Someone can help you, Somebody wants you

Somebody needs you, Someone can help you

Won’t you give it just one more chance?

Love can really help an old romance

Can’t you see your feelings are out of balance?

Someone can help you, Somebody wants you

Somebody needs you, Someone can help you

The Closer I Get (3:40)

You look at me.  But what can I do?

You’re not free.  I see him watching you to figure it out.

The closer I get to you

The more I like what I see

The closer I get to you

The closer I wanna be.

We make love.  But only with our eyes.

It makes it tough.  But it’s a fair disguise to carry out.

The closer I get to you

The more I like what I see

The closer I get to you

The closer I wanna be.

There’s nothing that I wouldn’t do to have you

But I don’t like those games he makes us play

The feelings I get puts my heart to the test

For the words that I want to say

I can’t let go.  I’ve got to make my move.

I want you to know. I’ve got to speak my news.

I’m letting it out!

The closer I get to you

The more I like what I see

The closer I get to you

The closer I wanna be.

Big Big Numbers (3:30)

I look into your eyes and I know it’s true

I hear your words but I don’t think that you do

You hide the things that you don’t want to know

Silly statements from the point of fact

Useless sentences and paragraphs.

You’re playing with big big big big numbers

You’re playing with big big big big numbers!

I heed the sounds coming from far away

The funny rhythms of games that you play

A token symbol of someone’s fantasy

Not much more to you than meets the ear

Simple static gestures voicing clear.

You’re playing with big big big big numbers

You’re playing with big big big big numbers!

Romance and fantasy

You believe what you want to believe

Being all that you can be

But is it all that you need?

I read the captions of your realities

To get the facts on your priorities

The dated copies all start to look the same

Motion lipless saying “I love you”

All the more demanding “Love me do”.

You’re playing with big big big big numbers

You’re playing with big big big big numbers!

Secret Place (3:33)

Deep within these walls I live

They give me strength I have to give

But I could stand these chains all right

If I can make it one more night.

I’ve got a secret place

I’ve got a secret place

I’ve got a secret place I can go

Nobody knows

At times it gets so dark in here

It seems as though I’ve disappeared

The shades are drawn, the lights go out

And no one hears my screams or shouts.

I’ve got a secret place

I’ve got a secret place

I’ve got a secret place I can go

Nobody knows

Do you know what it would be like hiding in a shell for all your life?

Now you turn your back and run away

Searching for the words you want to say.

So instead of going out to play

I think I’ll just stay home today

It feels too strange to be outside

What if the television weatherman lied?

I’ve got a secret place

I’ve got a secret place

I’ve got a secret place I can go

Nobody knows

She’s A Liar & A Spy (3:43)

She was on a big fact-finding mission

Revealing all her truth through inquisition

Combing through the files from my checkered past

She’s looking for some nonsense that will last.

She’s a Liar and a Spy!

Treading around throwing mud in your eye

She tells you what but never tells you why

She’s a Liar and a Spy! Oh yeah!

The methods of her game can be so distracting

Leaving us no chance of interacting

She follows through the chase ever so humble

Risking all her clues to makes you stumble

She’s a Liar and a Spy

Treading around throwing mud in your eye

She tells you what but never tells you why

She’s a Liar and a Spy! Oh yeah!

And there she goes now hot on the trail!

Playing detective so well

Well you can just waste your time for free

‘Cause you won’t get anything on me!

Tonight, the party was so well attended

Wrapping up her case the sport has ended

Now on her rambling way and straight to bed

A magistrate whose marbles have no head

She’s a Liar and a Spy!

Treading around throwing mud in your eye

She tells you what but never tells you why

She’s a Liar and a Spy!

She’s a Liar and a Spy!

Working her way through the FBI

She loves to laugh, but she hates to cry

She’s a Liar and a Spy! Oh yeah!

You Do (3:12)

Every time I try to love you

You act like someone’s there up above you it’s true

Yeah you do.

And every time I want to see you

You act as though there’s nothing between me and you

Yeah you do.

You do …

And don’t you know why I feel lazy

When all you do is say something crazy and cute

Yeah you do.

You do …

Why must I go on waiting so long?

What are you trying to do?

And why do you pretend?

How can I get in?

Why don’t you see what I go through?

You do …

Why must I go on waiting so long?

What are you trying to do?

And why do you pretend?

How can I get in?

Why don’t you see what I go through?

And when I’m feeling tired and lonely

You ring me up to see if I’m home and with who

Yeah you do.

You do …

Every time I try to love you.

Terminally Hip (4:06)

She’s terminally pretty, she’s terminally hip

She’s terminally witty, she’s terminally hip

Ah … hip!

She tells you know one’s ever loved her, relationships don’t last

But she can’t see the future for the past

She needs to know the love of someone to make her feel all right

A touch to keep her warm all through the night.

She’s terminally pretty, she’s terminally hip

She’s terminally witty, she’s terminally hip

Is it me?  Is it you?  Is there anything at all that I could do?

And when she tells you she don’t love you remember it in stride

If she can’t learn to love you, she will hide

And as she sits the party’s over, the little girl’s alone

And she’ll be by herself tonight at home

She’s terminally pretty, she’s terminally hip

She’s terminally witty, she’s terminally hip

She’s terminally pretty, she’s terminally hip

She’s terminally witty, she’s terminally hip

There she goes and you know …

Missile Envy (3:19)

Watch the TV, read the news

Convinces me they’re not my views

There's people dying in the streets

Leaving spirits incomplete

If it’s life you love you can’t afford to waste

Missile envy!

As you turn to view each other face to face

Missile envy!

We burst the rainclouds, terminating future years

We pledge allegiance to the hate

Praying for our children’s sake

If it’s life you love you can’t afford to waste

Missile envy!

As you turn to view each other face to face

Missile envy!

Universal statements from earthbound men!

Trying to blind us all into their master plans!

Missile Envy, Missile Envy, (it’s only)

Missile Envy, Missile Envy

You murder me and I kill you

What happens then is we both lose

Why do so many take the chance?

‘Cause they can’t keep it in their pants

If it’s life you love you can’t afford to waste

Missile envy!

As you turn to view each other face to face

Missile envy!

Universal statements from earthbound men!

Trying to blind us all into their master plans!

Missile Envy, Missile Envy, (it’s only)

Missile Envy, Missile Envy …
